Introduction

The Development of a Health & Fitness app for the iOS platform.

For my final year project I built a health and fitness app for the iOS platform that tracks users steps and calories burned.

People with different physicality’s and different levels of fitness burn calories differently and with that in mind I researched on how to accurately calculate the amount of calories burned based on the answers to a series of questions asked to the user during setup. Taking this research I built just that.

On first launch of the app the user is asked a series of questions based on their physicality. From the details provided by the user the app calculates the amount of calories burned based on the steps taken. The user can also set their daily step goal.

Why build a Health & Fitness app?

I built a Health & Fitness application for iOS as I had previously worked as an iOS developer for MobaNode and wanted to continue on developing my skills as an iOS developer. I took an interest in Health & Fitness in general around this time so I thought it would be a natural fit to merge the two together for my final year project.

How was it built?

The app was built using Objective-C as Swift was only in its infancy at the time. To access the data provided by the motion coprocessors a framework called Core Motion was used. This framework allows developers to access motion data collected by the device. The app was built to support, at the time, the current and most recent predecessor of iOS, iOS 7 and iOS 8.
